Creating a Better Shelter Experience for Rescue Dogs
At Rescue Revival, we're always inspired by organizations and innovators who go above and beyond for rescue dogs. That’s why we’re proud to spotlight the San Diego Humane Society (SDHS) and COAR Design Group for their thoughtful, dog-focused approach to shelter design.
COAR worked closely with SDHS to create an environment that prioritizes the health, comfort, and adoptability of dogs in their care. One of the standout features is the sawtooth kennel layout, designed to reduce stress by minimizing direct sightlines between dogs and offering more privacy. This configuration creates a calmer atmosphere and supports a smoother path to adoption.
The upgraded shelter also emphasizes peace and recovery through:
Improved sound insulation and air quality, helping reduce overstimulation.
Durable materials and efficient drainage, making daily cleaning less disruptive for dogs and ensuring a sanitary, low-stress space.
Spacious agility yards and interaction rooms, giving dogs much-needed opportunities for play, exercise, and one-on-one time with potential adopters.
Perhaps most notably, SDHS is home to a specialized Behavior Center—one of only a few in the country—created to support dogs who are fearful, reactive, or require extra time and training to become adoptable. By providing a calm, predictable environment tailored to their needs, the center gives these dogs the best possible chance to thrive and find a forever home.
This kind of thoughtful design is a game-changer for rescue dogs, proving that with the right environment, every dog has the potential to shine.
