From Hopeless to Home: Help Us Save More Dogs Like Greyson
When Greyson was rescued by Nancy and Tattered Paws & Golden Hearts Rescue in April 2023, his future was uncertain. He had survived a brutal distemper infection that left him with lasting neurological effects, a persistent tick, and significant skin and mobility issues. Yet, despite all of this, Greyson waited patiently in the garden of the shelter, watching as dog after dog left for loving homes, never losing hope that one day it would be his turn.
While Greyson was receiving the medical attention he had always deserved, his journey took an even more heartbreaking turn. He was diagnosed with degenerative myelopathy, a progressive disease that would eventually paralyze him and cause him to lose bowel control. Knowing the life that awaited him in Türkiye was one of isolation and limited care, Tattered Paws made a critical decision: Greyson would come to the United States as a hospice foster. They knew his time might be limited, but they were determined that his final chapter would be filled with love.
That’s when Hailey stepped in.
In May 2024, Greyson traveled across the world, carried by a chain of selfless volunteers, to a foster home in upstate New York. For the first time, Greyson got to experience the simple joys of life: a family who adored him, siblings to play with, toys to hoard, lakes to swim in, and long walks where he could ride alongside his pack in his custom-made “G Wagon.”
Greyson endured countless vet visits, X-rays, and diagnostic tests, but it was during a neurological consult in Vermont that everything changed. The specialists there delivered news no one dared to hope for—Greyson’s degenerative myelopathy diagnosis was wrong. What they had believed to be a progressive, terminal condition was, in fact, the lingering effects of his past distemper infection. He was not dying. He was just different.
The neurologist confirmed that while Greyson’s hind-end weakness and myoclonic ticks would remain, his brain was fully functional. He would live out his life as a “special needs” dog, but he could have a full, happy, and long life.
For two months, Hailey cherished every moment with Greyson, believing her role was to give him a beautiful send-off. But fate had a better plan. Two of Greyson’s transport volunteers, Justine and Kayla, fell in love with him during his journey. Today, Greyson lives in Connecticut with his two moms and a house full of kitty siblings. He is thriving thanks to their unwavering commitment to his care, including physical therapy and specialized treatments to keep him mobile and comfortable. Greyson’s story could have ended in tragedy. Instead, it became a testament to what happens when people refuse to give up on a life that deserves saving.
But Greyson is just one.
There are countless others still waiting in shelters overseas—dogs who are overlooked because their needs are too great, or their future deemed too uncertain. With your help, we can change that. Our Gold For Good Campaign aims to raise over $30,000 to bring at least five more dogs like Greyson to safety, where they can receive proper medical care, experience love for the first time, and find families willing to embrace their “imperfections.”
None of this is possible without you. Every donation brings us closer to writing more stories like Greyson’s. Every share of this campaign helps us reach new hearts willing to give these dogs a chance. Together, we can turn hopeless cases into happy endings.
Help us make that happen. Donate. Share. Be part of saving their lives.
